Beijing. June 25. Silkroadnews - Jiangxi Province issued a new rule on restriction of abortions after the 14th week of pregnancy, saying that a woman must have the signed consent of three medical specialists, Global Times reports.
The province’s Health and Family Planning Commission recently issued a notice stating that women who are pregnant for more than 14 weeks should have a signed approval of three health professionals who confirm that abortion is a medical necessity.
The move is aimed to protect the health and safety of the pregnant woman, as the abortion after 14 weeks of pregnancy is dangerous, said Liang Zhongtang, a research fellow at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.
Nevertheless, the decision caused heated online discussions, as some considered it an interference in private life.
On average, more than 13 million women in the country annually undergo abortion in the hospital, not including those who use illegal clinics services.
Many of them are unmarried young women, half of them are younger than 25, and 7.8% have made at least three abortions.
