Beijing. May 18. Silkroadnews - According to a new report by the United Nations (UN) published by the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), by 2050 almost 20% of China’s residents will live in cities or urban areas, China Plus reports.
DESA published the results in its annual report on the world urbanization prospects of 2018, which also states that global population growth is expected to occur in highly concentrated areas and only in a handful countries.
“Together, India, China, and Nigeria will account for 35 percent of the projected growth of the world’s urban population between 2018 and 2050. It is projected that India will have added 416 million urban dwellers, China 255 million, and Nigeria 189 million,” the DESA report said.
The report also notes, by 2030 there could be 43 megacities in the world, which is 30% more than today. Most cities with a population of more than 10 million people will be located in developing countries.
In particular, by 2028, the Indian capital of New Delhi could become the most populous city on the planet. At present, the world’s largest city is Tokyo with its 37 million inhabitants, followed by New Delhi - with 29 million inhabitants, and Shanghai - with 26 million.
According to the report, the growing population will place additional demands on resources and services in urban areas.
“Many countries will face challenges in meeting the needs of their growing urban populations, including housing, transportation, energy systems and other infrastructure; as well as for employment and basic services such as education and health care,” it says, urging all governments to develop an integrated policy to improve the quality of life for both urban and rural residents.
At the same time, it will be necessary to strengthen the connections between urban and rural areas on the basis of existing economic, social and environmental relationships.
