China ranks second in the world on organ donation
Almaty. March 13. Silkroadnews – China ranks second in the world in terms of organ donation number, “People’s Daily” writes.
“The main problem is a deficit of the organ transplant surgeons. Last year 4080 cases of cadaveric donation were registered among the Chinese citizens and 13000 organ transplant operations were performed. China has turned to be the second country in the world in terms of the number of organ transplants operations, and also ranked second, after the US, in the world in organ donation. The success rates significantly increased, among them alive-at-1 rate after liver transplantation exceeded 95%”, Huang Jiefu, Chairman of the Chinese National Organ Donation and Transplantation Committee, said.
Huang Jiefu explained that starting from 2015 organ donation from voluntary civilian organ donors has become the only legitimate source of organ transplantations. At the end of last year more than 100 thousand people registered as voluntary organ donors using the special mobile “Application of organ donation registration” launched in the Alipay payment system of the Chinese company Alibaba.
Huang Jiefu was also quite straight telling that China still faces such problems as imperfections in the organ transplant management system, lack of health care professionals, high cost of operations, etc. in particular, he mentioned, around 300 thousand people per year can prolong and save their lives through timely organ transplantation in China, yet only 31 thousand people are registered in the official waiting list.
“The biggest problem is that we do not have enough physicians and hospitals meeting the standards accepted for transplantation”, Huang Jiefu said, noting that the number of organ donations registered among Chinese citizens last year was many times over compared to one recorded for the previous few years, though only about 380 heart transplants and 204 lung transplants operations were performed.
With this he also added that in the next five years the number of hospitals for organ transplantation in China is expected to raise to 500.
