Chinese company to build a ‘magic’ stadium for World Cup 2022
Beijing. June 26. Silkroadnews - Despite China’s national soccer team remaining a disappointment, Chinese companies are playing an increasingly big role in the FIFA World Cup. In the latest move, a Chinese company announced to build a “magic stadium” for the 2022 World Cup to be held in Qatar, Global Times reports.
China International Marine Container (Group) Ltd (CIMC) announced its participation in the construction of the Ras Abu Aboud stadium for the World Cup 2022.
According to the company, the seven-story stadium will consist of 990 6-meter by 2.5-meter by 2.5-meter modular containers, the report reads.
“Strictly speaking, we are not ‘building’ but ‘producing’ this stadium”, Wang Fei, a project manager of CIMC, said.
The production of the 990 containers will start in July and is scheduled to be completed by 2019, and the whole project is expected to be completed by June 2020.
The stadium, as the company officials note, will be the first “green stadium” to be “detachable, mobile and recyclable” in the history of the FIFA World Cup.
Thus, it becomes possible “to use less material, give rise to less waste and emissions, and save three years for construction,” the agency quoted Wang saying.
The stadium can be reused for other events elsewhere, and can also be converted into several smaller objects. They can be fully converted into economically affordable housing or refugee camps.
In the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, China will not only participate in but “become a primary contractor of core projects of the event, which will be a good chance for Chinese companies to show their capability to not only build facilities but also to integrate worldwide resources, which can enhance the reputation of the concept of ‘made in China’”, Bai Ming, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, told the Global Times.
Another company, China Railway Construction Corporation Ltd, will be the contractor for the construction of the main stadium for the World Cup 2022, where the opening and closing ceremonies will take place.
