95% of Kyrgyzstan’s populated areas are exposed to mudflows and floods, the ministry officials said
Almaty. May 26. Silkroadnews – 95% of Kyrgyzstan’s populated areas are exposed to mudflows and floods, KyrTAG writes with reference to the report of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
“Kyrgyzstan’s territory is largely exposed to mudflow and flooding processes. On average every year the republic experiences about 70 emergencies related to mudflows and floods making around 29-30% of all emergency situations. 95% of all populated areas of the republic are subject to mudflows and floods, as they are located on the river banks or fans or temporary streams”, the document says.
During the flood period the mudflow activity is reported to come from rain storms and observed on the most rivers in the south of the republic in Osh, Jalal-Abad and Batken oblasts.
Almost the entire territory of Kyrgyzstan is a mudflow dangerous area with a total of 3 103 mudflow rivers. Most of them are located in the basins of the rivers: Chu – 479, Talas – 254, Naryn – 789, Kara-Darya – 666, Lake Issyk-Kul – 375.
