Almaty. August 11. Silkroadnews – A long-distance bus crash left 36 people killed in China, British newspaper The Bolton News reported.
“A long-distance passenger bus has crashed into the wall of a highway tunnel in north-west China, killing at least 36 people, including two children, and injuring 13 others. The vehicle smashed into the wall at the entrance to the tunnel on the four-lane highway”, report said on Friday.
The accident occurred in the province of Shaanxi shortly before midnight on Thursday local time, when the bus with a capacity of 51 seats, was heading to Luoyang, a city in central China, from the capital of south-western Sichuan, Chengdu.
It is reported that the bus was the only vehicle damaged in an accident, though there is no information if any other vehicles were involved in the crash.
As the newspaper notes, the intercity buses are a popular budget transport mode, particularly for migrant workers and people with low incomes and “highway accidents are common in China because of high speeds, aggressive driving and a failure to leave adequate braking distance”.
According to the World Health Organization, every year about 260,000 people die in traffic accident in mainland China – a rate of 18.8 deaths per 100,000 people.
