Beijing. June 4. Silkroadnews - Drivers and residents of the southern provinces said the Kabul-Kandahar highway has been almost completely destroyed and not repaired for many years, the Afghan Telegraph Agency (AfTAG) reports.
According to the drivers, the rains, floods and explosions damaged the roadway, increasing the number of road accidents on various sections of the route, writes OutlookAfghanistan.
The 557-kilometer highway is part of the mega-ring road built in 2002 with the help of the international community.
“We have always raised our voices and have said that this highway is highly damaged and needs reconstruction. Part of it has been damaged by floods while other parts have been damaged by explosions,” the drivers said.
Meanwhile, other drivers said the situation is the same with many other highways throughout the country. In particular, a section of Kabul-Mazar highway on the Salang Pass has been damaged from the Jabal Saraj district to Khenjan.
The Ministry of Public Works of Afghanistan stated this year it allocated funds to repair 235 kilometers of the country’s highways.
