Beijing. May 2. Silkroadnews - Over the past year, the strength of the Afghan security forces has declined by more than 35 thousand personnel, the Afghan Telegraph Agency (AfTAG) reports citing the latest regular report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR).
As of January 2017, the Afghan army and police, without civil servants, accounted for 331,708 personnel, while by 2018 it declined to 296,409 personnel.
In particular, the strength of the Afghan army, including the air force, declined from 177,711 to 165,622 personnel, and the Afghan national police (there is also local police) - from 153,997 to 130,787 personnel.
The NATO senior officials consider the possibility of sending additional troops to Afghanistan to expand the “Resolute Support” mission.
Last week, the NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the current strength of the “Resolute Support” mission is about 16,000 troops, and the option considered currently provides for sending another 1,500 personnel to the country as well. With this only the US troops take part in the military operations in Afghanistan.
