Afghanistan objects to NATO’s mission transformation into a military one, Afghanistan’s president says
Almaty. May 25. Silkroadnews – The Afghan authorities do not want a change in the current nature of the US-NATO mission in Afghanistan turning it into a military mission once again, President of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani states, the Afghan Telegraph Agency (AfTAG) reports.
According to the publication, the head of the republic noted the Afghan security forces conduct military operations at present and the authorities do not want the Western militaries to again take an active part in the fighting.
During a video conference with the Secretary General of NATO and ambassadors of the member countries of the alliance, Ashraf Ghani expressed the desire to double the strength of the Afghan special forces and create a special army corps of special forces.
The US military considers the Afghan special forces to be a fully operational and effective combat force capable of fighting against the Taliban, IS and other terrorist organizations. The number of troops in special forces reaches 17 thousand people. They take part in 80% of all combat operations. The total strength of Afghanistan’s armed forces is about 300 thousand people.
At present the US government considers issue of the US-NATO mission to be continued in Afghanistan. Within the nearest days President Donald Trump is expected to speak in Brussels and announce a new Afghan strategy.
