Almaty. December 29. Silkroadnews – According to AfTAG, Afghanistan will buy around 100 thousand tonnes of wheat from Uzbekistan.

“Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock of Afghanistan announced around 100 thousand tonnes of wheat will be imported from Uzbekistan in the next three months to be used for emergency purposes”, the statement said.

It is reported that India has also agreed to supply 130 thousand tons of wheat to Afghanistan.

At the same time the country’s agricultural experts asked the government to develop a strategy to allow the country to become self-sufficient in terms of wheat production.

“Instead of importing the wheat, the government could focus on its cultivation; it will contribute to the economic development of the country and improve the lives of farmers”, a member of the Academy of Sciences Yasamin Farahmand said.

The agency reminded, the internal consumption of wheat in Afghanistan totals nearly 6 million tonnes per year, of which 4.5 million tonnes are provided by the local farmers with remaining part provided out of import.
