Almaty. November 23. Silkroadnews - Air China indefinitely suspends flights between Beijing and Pyongyang, Geo News agency reports.
“Air China Ltd has indefinitely suspended flights between Beijing and Pyongyang, citing poor demand as North Korea faces growing sanctions from the United States over its nuclear weapons and missile programs,” the report said.
Air China’s flights to Pyongyang were carried out on Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting from 2008, but have frequently been canceled. Last year Air China suspended flights in winter, but then resumed them in March.
Reportedly Air China can resume flights when there is sufficient demand for the service, and the airline’s representative office in Pyongyang will resume normal operation, even if there are no regular flights between Beijing and Pyongyang.
The United States urged China to increase pressure on the DPRK due to “belligerent defiance of UN resolutions”.
China’s foreign ministry stated it hopes all the parties will be able to contribute to the settlement of the issue on the Korean peninsula peacefully. At the same time, representatives of the ministry said they did not know about Air China flights suspension, adding that the airlines make their decisions based on the market needs.
