American student has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for espionage in Iran
Almaty. July 17. Silkroadnews – A student from Princeton University has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in Iran accused of spying for the United States, the New York Times reported.
The arrest and sentencing of Chinese-born American Xiyue Wang, 37, a graduate student working on a doctorate in history, became known a few months after he disappeared in Iran, where he gathered material for the thesis. There were rumors of his arrest, but officially this was confirmed only last Sunday, the publication says.
He has also been reported to have connections with British intelligence.
A spokesperson for Princeton University confirmed that X. Wang is their student, and also said the university had been aware of his arrest for a long time, yet did not give publicity to this fact, hoping to free the student through the negotiations.
