Area of Iranian Lake Urmia has increased fourfold in last three years
Beijing. June 1. Silkroadnews - Local officials responsible for the revival of Lake Urmia in the province of Western Azerbaijan reported on the achieved results, the Iranian Telegraph Agency (IrTAG) reports.
“After forming the committee to revive Lake Urmia, ‘the turquoise solitaire of Azerbaijan’ has increased in area by 1,852 square kilometers, equal to 4.3 times, to 2,402 square kilometers in the past three years,” the agency quoted saying by Farhad Sarkhosh, the head of the office of the committee for the revival of Lake Urmia in the province of Western Azerbaijan.
As of May 30, 2018, the level of Urmia is 1270.85 meters above sea level, which is 79 centimeters higher than the lowest recorded level of the lake, the official told reporter of Mehr News Agency.
“In September 2015, the height from the sea-level of Lake Urmia was 1,270.08 meters which is the lowest level of the lake recorded so far. Prior to the formation of the committee, the area of the lake had shrunk to around 550 square kilometers,” he added.
