Almaty. September 19. Silkroadnews – ASEAN member states carry out meeting on transnational crimes in Manila, Xinhua news agency reported.
“Southeast Asian ministers converged in Manila on Monday to discuss steps on how to strengthen regional strategies and cooperation to combat transnational crimes,” the report said.
The four-day ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime is chaired by Catalino Cuy in charge of the Philippine Department of the Interior and Local Government.
One of the main issues on the agenda is growth of radicalization and violent extremism. During the meeting, ASEAN member states are expected to share and exchange experiences, views and ideas on the most effective practices to address the issue.
The transnational crimes, as explained, include terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, arms smuggling, money laundering, maritime piracy, cybercrime, economic crimes, environmental crimes, theft of intellectual property and smuggling of cultural property.
The report reminds, according to the report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in 2016, transnational crime is flourishing in South-East Asia, aided by rapid regional economic integration and insufficiently effective cross-border police work.
ASEAN includes 10 member states, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
