Almaty. August 8. Silkroadnews – Australia, the United States and Japan condemned China’s actions in the South China Sea, Australian newspaper “The Sydney Morning Herald” reports.
“Australia, the United States and Japan have denounced island-building and militarization of the South China Sea in a joint statement likely to prompt an angry response from China”, the report said.
It is explained that in a statement issued on the sidelines of the ASEAN forum in Manila, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and her two colleagues called on China to comply with the last year’s UN-backed tribunal that rejected almost all of Beijing’s claims to strategically important and resource-rich waterways.
As the newspaper notes, China has refused to recognize the decision of the tribunal and insists on the US and its allies to stay out of purely bilateral disputes between China and its neighbors. Other contenders for the sea are the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei.
According to the publication, a third of world trade passes along waterways, where China built artificial islands and placed weapons, radars and aircraft.
In July Vietnam completed the drilling of oil and gas in disputed waters 400 kilometers from the coast after China threatened to attack Vietnamese bases in case the drilling works continue.
