Canada and Iran can resume diplomatic relations this year
Almaty. May 11. Silkroadnews – Canada and Iran can resume diplomatic relations till the end of the year, IrTAG reports.
“The agreement (on diplomatic relations – KazTAG) can be concluded this year”, the publication said with reference to TASS.
After winning the election in 2015 Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated he would like to reach an agreement with Tehran, “though the process turned to be more complicated than it was expected”. Official representatives of two states’ governments have already discussed this issue meeting at neutral territory – in Switzerland and New York – several times in 2016 and 2017.
Canada severed diplomatic relations with Iran and closed its embassy in Tehran in September 2012 by the decision of the former Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Following statements by new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on intention to resume the diplomatic relations in February 2016, Ottawa partially lifted sanctions against Iran dealing with restrictions on the goods import and export.
With this Canada has so far left in force sanctions on “export of goods, services and technologies to Iran, which may have a dual purpose in the security field”.
