Beijing. May 10. Silkroadnews - China’s Huazhong University of Science and Technology developed the cutting-edge digital positron emission tomography (PET) scan, Xinhua reports.
PET scanning is one of the most sophisticated ways of getting images of organs in medicine. Compared to other medical methods of research, such as computed tomography scanning, X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), PET has an advantage in early detection of oncological and brain diseases.
The equipment is being clinically tested in the hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and Cancer center of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong Province.
According to Xie Qingguo, the project manager, previously it was foreign companies that owned a monopoly on high-tech medical equipment. However, the university’s scientific team has developed its own equipment that has been granted several patents, both domestically and abroad. The equipment developed by China can detect diseases at the earlier stages and more accurately in comparison with other equipment.
“Once it is put into clinical use, it will help people combat diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease at a lower cost and for much better results,” the agency quoted Xie saying.
