China has submitted an application for membership in the International Organization for Migration

Almaty. June 14. Silkroadnews – China has submitted an application for membership in the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to become an official member of this organization and take even more important part there, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lu Kang said.

“Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Chao met with William Lacy Swing, Director General of the International Organization for Migration, and handed him an appropriate document signed by Foreign Minister Wang Yi,” Chinese media quoted diplomat saying.

According to him, the IOM is the most important inter-governmental organization in the field of migration. Since 2001 when China was granted observer status at the organization two sides cooperated on migration management and consular assistance abroad. The IOM assisted the Chinese citizens in Syria and Micronesia.

“China is a country with a huge population and a significant migration processes. If China officially becomes a member state to the IOM, it will be able to play a more active role and contribute more to the sphere of international migration in the future,” Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
