Almaty. August 18. Silkroadnews – China presented a system of active protection for armored vehicles, Russian internet portal “Военное обозрение” reported.
China’s largest defense company North Industries Corporation (Norinco) held a presentation of its new GL5 active protection system designed for the VT4 main battle tanks, also known as MBT3000, the report said.
The new system was shown in the field exhibition Norinco Corporation held for foreign customers.
As reported, during the demonstration, the GL-5 system successfully intercepted guided anti-tank missile. The system consists of four launchers, providing circular protection, each of which contains 3 projectiles. The radar tracks objects within a 100-m radius. The system intercepts and destroys incoming missiles and rockets with an air blast.
The publication reminds, the first active tank defense systems were developed in the USSR in 1950-1960s. The first serial system of active protection was the Israeli Trophy, developed in 2005 to detect and destroy missiles and RPG shells fired at the tank. To date, active defense systems for armored vehicles have been developed in Israel, Russia, the U.S., Turkey, and now in China.
