China provided $1 million to fight food crises in Afghanistan
Almaty. October 23. Silkroadnews – China provided $1 million to the UN World Food Program (WFP) as humanitarian aid for people affected by food crisis in Afghanistan, the Afghan Telegraph Agency (AfTAG) reports.
The funds will be allocated to assist nearly 38,000 people, including Afghan repatriates from Pakistan, as well as internally displaced residents of central and southern provinces, the Afghan media reported.
This is a good opportunity to start trilateral cooperation with the UN Food Program and Afghanistan, Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan Yao Jing was quoted saying. He stressed that with the winter coming China considers it very important to help Afghan families affected by food crisis.
In his turn WFP Deputy Country Director for Afghanistan Paul Howe thanked the Chinese government for the assistance and expressed hope for further cooperation on the Afghan issue. According to him, in 2017, WFP will provide food to nearly 2.9 million people in Afghanistan, affected by armed conflicts and natural disasters, as well as 550,000 internally displaced persons and refugees returning to their homeland.
