Almaty. November 22. Silkroadnews - China donated UNICEF $2 million to help children in Somalia, the Global Times reported.
“Chinese government donated 2 million US dollars to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to help reach 15,000 young children suffering from severe acute malnutrition in the southern and central regions of Somalia,” the report said.
Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Qin Jian said the funds will be allocated to provide food and medicines to support vulnerable people, including 15,000 children, who suffer from severe malnutrition because of the drought.
“We are pleased to be working with UNICEF to ensure the needs of the most vulnerable group - children and women - are met. Together, we can help the Somali people go through this difficult time,” the agency quoted Qin saying.
According to the UNICEF, the people of the Horn of Africa face a humanitarian crisis caused by drought, which led to massive population migration, outbreaks of disease and malnutrition. As a result, 6.2 million people, including 4 million of children, need humanitarian assistance. According to the fund, more than 230,000 children may suffer from hunger next year.
The UNICEF Representative in Somalia Steven Lauwerier expressed gratitude to the Chinese government, saying China’s assistance to Somalia is a concrete manifestation of China’s role as a responsible major country.
“The timely aid from the Chinese government and the Chinese people will go a long way toward saving children's lives. We hope this will be the beginning of a long and productive partnership between China and UNICEF in Somalia,” Lauwerier said.
