Almaty. December 8. Silkroadnews – This year China observes grain production reduction caused by decrease in acreage and yield per unit area, “Xinhua” agency writes.

According to data released on Thursday by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, this year’s gross grain harvest amounted to about 616 million tonnes, which is a 0.8% decrease compared to the previous year.

This year cereals sown area in the country decreased by 315 thousand hectares and the yield per unit area decreased by 30.7 kg per hectare.

As the NBS senior statistician said, due to imbalance between supply and demand for various types of crops, many grain-growing areas have taken a number of measures to optimize the structure of crop production, including reduction of maize area while growing soybeans and others cultures increase.

He also added, the main reasons behind the decrease of grain yield per unit area are decrease in the acreage of high-yielding culture and significant number of serious natural disasters: drought and torrential rains.
