China says a former Maldivian president’s accusation are ridiculous
Beijing. February 15. Silkroadnews - China says a former Maldivian president’s accusation as ridiculous, China Daily reported.
“Beijing dismissed a former Maldivian president’s remarks on China-Maldives cooperation as one-sided and disparaging,” the report said.
Mohamed Nasheed, who served as president from 2008 to 2012, has accused China of seizing control of 17 islands in the Maldives. He said he will seek an international convention against what he called a land grab and force China to sign it if he returns to power.
Nasheed’s remarks are “pure fabrication” and “ridiculous,” the official spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Geng Shuang said.
“I need to remind Mr Nasheed that it is ultimately up to people in the two countries to judge and say whether China-Maldives cooperation is in line with both sides' interests and whether it has benefited them and their people,” he said.
Geng added that cooperation will not be overshadowed by one-sided remarks of some individuals.
China’s assistance is not politically motivated and does not in any way infringe upon the sovereignty or independence of the Maldives, not to touch on security in the Indian Ocean, Geng said on Thursday.
The crisis in the Maldives began on February 1, when the country’s Supreme Court ordered the release of several imprisoned politicians and abolished the verdict of Nasheed, who lives in self-imposed exile. However, this decision was overturned on February 6.
