Almaty. September 26. Silkroadnews – China sent 2,609 policemen for UN peacekeeping missions, People’s Daily reported.
“China has sent 2,609 policemen for United Nations peacekeeping missions so far, dispatching the largest number of peacekeeping personnel among the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council,” the report said.
The agency reminded, the first 15 policemen of the country’s peacekeeping force were sent to the UN peacekeeping mission to East Timor on January 12, 2000. Since then, China’s peacekeeping forces’ participation geography has expanded to include nine countries: Afghanistan, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Kosovo, Cyprus, Liberia, Sudan, Southern Sudan and Haiti.
As the publication emphasizes, “political instability, warfare, harsh climates, and medicine shortages are routine issues for peacekeeping troops. But these difficulties have never discouraged Chinese peacekeeping troops.”
The UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, lauded the efforts of the Chinese peacekeeping forces after a drill of the force in late June. He believes the Chinese forces will succeed in their work and serve as an example for future peacekeeping missions, the report said.
