Almaty. September 11. Silkroadnews – China plans to introduce a ban on petrol and diesel cars, The Irish Times reported.
“China is joining France and Britain in announcing plans to end sales of petrol and diesel cars. The industry ministry is developing a timetable to end production and sale of traditional fuel cars and will promote development of electric technology”, the report said.
No specific dates have been given so far, yet Beijing is increasing pressure on automakers to develop production and sales of electric vehicles. As China is the biggest car market in terms of vehicles sold, any changes in this area are important for the global industry.
It is reported that Beijing supported the development of electric vehicles with billions in subsidies for research and development and incentives for buyers, but switched to a quota system that would create a financial burden for automakers. According to the proposed quotas, next year electric and hybrid cars would have to account for 8% of the output of each automaker, 10% - in 2019 and 12% - in 2020.
Beijing has ordered state-owned Chinese energy companies to speed up installation of charging stations to increase the electric vehicles attractiveness.
It is reported that General Motors, Volkswagen, Nissan and other companies have announced that they are launching or considering the possibility of launching joint ventures with Chinese partners to develop and manufacture electric vehicles in China.
In July France and Britain announced that they would stop selling petrol and diesel cars by 2040 as part of efforts to reduce pollution and carbon emissions that contribute to global warming.
