China works to create world’s most powerful supercomputer
Almaty. October 20. Silkroadnews – China works to create world’s most powerful supercomputer, China Daily reported.
“China is developing and building the Tianhe-3, the world’s first exascale supercomputer. When completed it will be capable of a quintillion (a billion, billion or 1 followed by 18 zeros) calculations per second. It will be 10 times faster the current world leader, China’s Sunway TaihuLight, and will “become an important platform for national scientific development and industrial reforms”,” the agency quoted Meng Xiangfei, head of the applications department at the National Supercomputer Center, saying.
According to him, the new supercomputer will be used for working with big data and developing artificial intelligence. With this it will also work with such traditional industries as steel production, mining sector, creation of business models, smart healthcare systems and smart cities.
Reportedly, Tianhe-1, China’s first supercomputer, is capable of carrying out quadrillion (1 followed by 15 zeros) operations per second, performs more than 1,400 computing tasks simultaneously and can complete around 10,000 tasks per day. Tianhe-1 serves more than 1600 research institutes and companies from more than 20 provinces. Its huge computing power is used to scan the Earth for oil, create artificial nuclear fusion, build aircraft and marine equipment.
