Chinese Xiaomi became leader in Indian smartphone market
Beijing. Jul 9. Silkroadnews - Preparing for the initial public offering in Hong Kong, the manufacturer of smartphones Xiaomi company has bypassed Samsung in the Indian market, taking the lead in the country, China Plus reported.
Sellers say, the popularity of Xiaomi is mainly being driven by price. E.g., Xiaomi smartphone with 2GB RAM and 16GB memory costs 7,000 rupees, while smartphones with similar characteristics by other manufacturers cost 10,000 - 11,000 rupees.
According to Hong Kong Counterpoint Research, during the first three months of the year, the share of Xiaomi smartphone shipments to India increased to 31%, compared to slightly more than 13% in the same quarter last year. In addition, Xiaomi declares it wants to expand its presence and set up production of goods ranging from TVs to T-shirts in India.
The phone manufacturer is tapping a market where there are still large numbers who don't own a smartphone. But Chinese budget brands like Xiaomi, and Vivo and Oppo, mean more people can afford to buy these devices. India is now the second largest smartphone market after China, the report reads.
It is worth noting that Indian brands also produce the budget devices.
