Combating illiteracy shall become a national program, the Afghan prime minister believes

Almaty. September 6. Silkroadnews – Prime Minister of Afghanistan Abdullah Abdullah urged to put the fight against illiteracy into a national program status, AfTAG reports.

«The Prime Minister noted that the country's high level of illiteracy major prerequisites are the problems of security and corruption. Dr. Abdullah expressed confidence that the population of the country is eager to get educated», the publication says.

Earlier, the Ministry of Education published the statistics saying 62% of the Afghan population aged over 15 years are illiterate and only 38% got a formal education.

«A lack of access to education is a great shame and sorrow», said the head of the Ministry Asadullah Hanif Balkhi, having noted the Ministry of Education strives to address this critical issue with the support by the international community.
