Almaty. November 1. Silkroadnews - Disrespecting national anthem and flag to be jailed of up to three years in China, Reuters reported.
“China’s largely rubber-stamp parliament is considering jail terms of up to three years for people who disrespect the national anthem or flag in public,” the report said.
In September China passed a new law providing for up to 15 days of detention for those who mock the national anthem “March of Volunteers.”
Now the parliament is considering whether to amend the Criminal Code of China to criminalize disrespect for the national anthem, including intentionally distorting its text or tune.
The tougher penalties are also planned to be imposed for desecration of the national flag or the emblem. Earlier this had been punishable by arrest for up to 15 days.
The draft amendment has been submitted for consideration at the bi-monthly session of the Standing Committee of Parliament, which started on Monday.
It is not yet clear when an amendment can be passed, yet this may happen at the end of the week, at the close of the current session of the parliament’s standing committee.
