Eighteen Chinese provinces have raised minimum salary threshold since the beginning of the year
Almaty. October 23. Silkroadnews - Eighteen Chinese provinces have raised minimum salary threshold since the beginning of the year, the Chinese information resource Peoples’ Daily reported.
“A total of 18 provinces in China have raised the minimum salary threshold as of Monday since the beginning of this year, in a bid to protect low-incomers’ interests,” the report said.
It is noted that the minimum salary levels for Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai exceeded 2000 yuan ($302) per month, with the highest level recorded in Shanghai 2300 yuan ($347).
According to the provisions that came into force in 2004, different administrative regions of the provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities are allowed to set the minimum level of salaries themselves.
Su Hainan, vice president of the China Association for Labor Studies, called for a proper adjustment of the minimum salary level, explaining that China’s economy has entered a new phase characterized by rapidly rising labor costs, increased demands on business and relatively low commodity prices.
The increase in minimum salaries, according to Su, should ensure a basic standard of living, avoiding too much pressure on enterprises.
