Almaty. October 26. Silkroadnews – The European Union (EU) is likely to propose to Prime Minister of Great Britain Theresa May to shorten the transition period after Brexit from two years to just 20 months, the Kazakh Telegraph Agency (KazTAG) reports with reference to TASS.
In this way, Britain will have to leave all the EU legal structures by December 31, 2020. The final decision, however, has not yet been made, 27 other EU member states have yet to formally discuss the transition period terms, the publication says quoting saying by high-ranking officials in Brussels on Wednesday.
However, on October 25, Brexit Secretary David Davis said in December the British government expects to agree with Brussels on the terms of the transition period after the UK exit from the EU. He also added, in case the Brexit talks fails and no trade deal is reached, the UK may reserve the right to reject to fulfill any financial obligations to Brussels after the termination of membership.
As previously reported, the talks between London and Brussels on the terms for the UK to leave from the EU started in the Belgian capital on June 19, almost a year after the opponents of European integration won the referendum in the United Kingdom. The negotiations are scheduled to last until November 2018, after which the parties will have six months to ratify the agreements reached in national parliaments. Brexit itself should be implemented not later than March 2019.
