Beijing. June 7. Silkroadnews - The European Commission (EC) has decided to impose new duties on the U.S. imported goods in response to U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum to come into effect in early July, the Kazakh Telegraph Agency (KazTAG) reports referring to Izvestia newspaper.
The EC noted that the decision of the Council of European Commission has been brought to the attention of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The statement says, the measures fully comply with the WTO rules and allow to cover the damage caused by the U.S. duties in the amount of 64 billion euros, the EC reported.
Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström said: “This is a measured and proportionate response to the unilateral and illegal decision taken by the United States to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminium exports. What’s more, the EU’s reaction is fully in line with international trade law. We regret that the United States left us with no other option than to safeguard EU interests.”
To remind, as of June 1, 2018, the US imposed duties on the import of steel and aluminum from the EU countries, as well as Mexico and Canada. Washington said the move is aimed to support American producers. The tariffs for steel and aluminum are 25% and 10%, respectively.
