German Chancellor called China for the rule of law

Almaty. June 13. Silkroadnews – During her visit to China the German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the rule of law as a basis for future relations between two countries, Deutsche Welle writes.

“It is always important for our companies and our joint projects to operate under conditions of a sound legal environment,” A. Merkel said on Monday at the opening of the German-Chinese intergovernmental consultations in Beijing.

She emphasized the human rights issue’s importance for both the ordinary citizens and government agencies to maintain the international dialogue.

The head of the German government expressed the hope that the new Chinese law on non-governmental organizations will not interfere with their activities within the country. She also said she expects the Chinese market to become open for foreign investments.

The publication noted, the German Chancellor’s visit to China has been accompanied by the Chinese authorities’ heavy-handed actions against human rights defenders and lawyers. According to the information by the legal group for human rights protection in China located in Hong Kong, more than 300 civil society activists and lawyers have been arrested, taken to the police or gone missing since summer of 2015.
