Beijing. April 11. Silkroadnews - Last year Beijing shut down 321 pig farms to improve the environment and save water, China Daily reports.
The National Bureau of Statistics in Beijing reported that the city produced 2.42 million hogs for slaughter in 2017, which is 12.1% less compared to the previous year.
The city has banned pig farming in regions with a total area of more than 5,200 square kilometers, which is almost one third of the entire city - near the major sources of drinking water, key infrastructure facilities and densely populated areas.
The fall in pork prices also led to closure of some farms.
In Beijing, more than 20 pig farms have also been chosen to promote the use of technologies for waste processing and water saving.
