Almaty. August 28. Silkroadnews – India and China agreed to halt confrontation over disputed border area, Singapore’s Today reports.
“India and China have agreed to an “expeditious disengagement” of troops in a disputed border area where their soldiers have been locked in a stand-off for more than two months, India’s foreign ministry said on Monday”, report said.
It is noted that the decision was made on the eve of the BRICS summit to be held in China next month, with expected participation of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.
According to the Indian Foreign Ministry, both sides agreed to defuse the crisis after diplomatic negotiations.
“In recent weeks, India and China have maintained diplomatic communication in respect of the incident at Doklam. On this basis, expeditious disengagement of border personnel at the face-off site at Doklam has been agreed to and is on-going”, the ministry said in a statement.
At the same time, no more details on the disengagement terms have not been given so far, though the area in case had raised fears of a wider conflict between the Asian giants who fought a brief border war in 1962.
The publication notes, China said its troops will continue to patrol the disputed area.
The agency reminds, the dispute between India and China on 3,500 km of undemarcated boundary began in June, when India sent its troops to stop China building a road in an area claimed by both China and Bhutan. India stated that Chinese military activities threatened the security of its own north-eastern region. China, in turn, said that India had no role to play in the area and insisted it withdraw troops unilaterally to avoid escalation of the conflict.
