Almaty. June 29. Silkroadnews - Tehran and Baghdad began laying the railway line, which will connect the railway system between the two countries, expanding the potential to create transnational transport corridors such as the "North-South" and the Chinese initiative "New Silk Road", reports IrTAG.
As the Minister of Roads and Urban Planning Abbas Akhund, Iran reached an agreement on the project between Iran and Iraq as the result of numerous meetings and consultations of representatives of relevant departments and experts of the two countries, which took place in late May during the visit of the Iraqi delegation to Tehran.
On Thursday, Akhund himself visited the city of Basra, in southern Iraq, which was the start of the beginning of construction work. According to the draft, the new railway will link Iranian Khorramshahr to Basra in Iraq.
Currently, the 12-kilometer stretch of road from the border town of Khorramshahr to Shalamche is almost ready. Iraq will now have to build on its territory another 32 km of tracks to the border. As part of the project through the Arvand River is planned to build a 700-meter drawbridge, responsible for the construction of which took over the Iranian side.
According to the minister, the project is scheduled for completion by November 2016.
