Iranian customs officials canceled ban on scrap metal imports from Iraq and Afghanistan
Almaty. May 31. Silkroadnews – The customs department of the Islamic Republic of Iran lifted the ban imposed in May on the scrap metal import from Iraq and Afghanistan at the request of the Iran Trade Promotion Organization (TPO), IrTAG reports.
Iran Customs Administration announced that any decision in this regard should now be coordinated with the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics.
According to TPO official Ali Aliabadi Farahani, imports of scrap from two neighboring countries were banned as some batches were confirmed as containing traces of nuclear radiation and harmful chemicals.
The industry experts say, the annual demand of Iranian steel plants amounts to 5 million tonnes of scrap, half of which must be satisfied through imports.
Scrap is currently less than 15% of the annual raw materials of Iranian steel plants.
