Beijing. April 3. Silkroadnews - Israel has suspended an agreement with the UN on illegal immigrants from Africa, the Kazakh Telegraph Agency (KazTAG) reports referring to BBC Russian service.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suspended an agreement with the UN refugee agency on the resettlement of African migrants to Europe and legalization of status of some of them in Israel. The agreement was reached on Monday, but a few hours later, Netanyahu announced in his Facebook post about the suspension of a deal, the report said on Tuesday.
According to the prime minister, on Tuesday he will meet with representatives of the southern regions of Tel-Aviv, where a large number of migrants live, and then decide what to do next.
A deal on the resettlement of more than 16,000 African migrants staying in Israel, with many of them seeking asylum, to the Western countries has been reached just a few hours before Benjamin Netanyahu put the plan on hold.
The agreements reached replaced a controversial plan to forcibly send male African migrants to third countries in Africa if they did not go voluntarily. It provided for over 16 thousand African migrants illegally staying in the country to be resettled by Western countries, including Canada, Italy and Germany.
A similar number of migrants were required to obtain a residence permit in Israel.
Earlier, the Supreme Court of Israel has blocked the decision to deport illegal migrants to their homeland meant to begin on Sunday.
