Kazakhstan to invest $1.2 billion to build hydropower station in Afghanistan

Almaty. January 9. Silkroadnews – Kazakhstan plans to invest $1 billion 200 million into construction of dam and hydroelectric power station on the river Kokcha in Takhar province of Afghanistan, Afghan news agency (AfTAG) reports with reference to the state’s Ministry of Energy and Water.

According to Abdul Basir Azimi, deputy minister for finance and administrative affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Water, the measures are being taken to attract investments into this sector and develop appropriate projects to be put up for auction later. He also says, the ministry considers a proposal of one of Kazakhstani companies on the construction of hydropower plant on the Kokcha river.

The HPP on the Kokcha is expected to provide about one third of the country’s population with electricity. According to information available, after reaching the design capacity the HPP production volume is planned to total 450 megawatts.
