Bishkek. April 18. Silkroadnews – 3.7 km.-long Kogard Pass tunnel construction is to start in June 2014, as Kyrgyz Minister of Transport and Communications, Kalybek Sultanov, reports.
“The Tunnel is to lie 2 500 m above the sea line. The project is being engineered by the Russian instition”, Mister Sultanov says.
The necessity of an alternative north-south route has arisen as existing Bishkek-Osh highway tunnel can no longer sustain the traffic level.
“Up to 1 million vehicles a year are using the old tunnel. Around 5 500 vehicles pass through it every 24 hours during the summer time. At the same time its capacity is 460 vehicles per 24 hours”, Mister Sultanov noticed.
