Kyrgyzstan ranks 94th in the world for prison population total

Almaty. August 25. Silkroadnews – In the world rating for prison population Kyrgyzstan ranks 87th out of 223 countries, regional director of Penal Reform International (PRI) Azamat Shambilov said, KyrTAG reports.

«In the global prison ranking including 223 countries Kyrgyzstan ranks 87th with 167 prison population rate per 100 000 of national population and 94th in prison population total. The country stays in the middle of the global ranking table of prison population», A. Shambilov said at the press conference on Thursday.

According to him, the modern resocialization programs allowing prisoners to be employed, help their families and reimburse the claims while serving their sentences are common throughout the CIS and Europe countries.

«In the next two years we will direct our efforts to build the necessary legislative changes and practical aspects: development of the state program of reintegration and mechanisms of employment of convicted after release.

Within the project we are going to work not only in the capital but in four regions of our country as well, which is very important to ensure the maximum work coverage in this direction», A. Shambilov added.
