Almaty. July 14. Silkroadnews – The only China’s Nobel Peace Prize winner, Liu Xiaobo, died of liver cancer, Indian NDTV reported.
“Liu Xiaobo’s death puts China in dubious company as he became the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate to die in custody since German pacifist Carl von Ossietzky, who passed away in a hospital while held by the Nazis in 1938. Liu Xiaobo died Thursday while still in custody following a battle with cancer, authorities said, after officials ignored international pleas to let him spend his final days free and abroad”, the report reads.
The Nobel Committee said they found it deeply disturbing that Liu Xiaobo was not transferred to a facility where he could receive adequate medical treatment before he came terminally ill. “The Chinese government bears a heavy responsibility for his premature death”, the statement said.
In turn, the legal bureau of the north-eastern city of Shenyang reported on its website that Liu had suffered multiple organ failure three days after he was transferred to the intensive care unit of the First Hospital of the Chinese Medical University.
The hospital said Liu Xiaobo was surrounded by his family and said goodbye to his wife. His final words were: “Live on well”.
