Beijing. February 1. Silkroadnews - The Pentagon is seriously concerned about Russia and China developing space combat lasers, British “Daily Star” reported.
“RUSSIA and China are developing high-tech space lasers that could shoot down US satellites in as little as two years’ time. Pentagon chiefs raised the alarm after intelligence boffins found evidence the lasers were in development and would be combat-ready by 2020,” the report said.
Dan Coats, the CIA director, warned the two countries were “considering attacking” the US, which could provoke a third world war. He said they are “increasingly considering attacks against satellite systems as part of their future warfare doctrine.”
“Both will continue to pursue a full range of anti-satellite weapons (ASAT) weapons as a means to reduce US military effectiveness,” the agency quoted him saying.
It is noted that Moscow is investing ₤3.5 million in weapons that could blast the enemy’s space satellites.
China does not make a secret of lasers development, and, according to the publication, conducted military tests in 2010, 2013 and 2014.
Coats noted, China’s secret development plans have shown its intention to dominate the space.
He added, “China’s military modernisation programme clearly includes an attempt to up its game in space. Weapons for space involve more than just ASAT systems, but these are the most overt signs of China’s progress.”
In his turn, Donald Tram called China and Russia the rivals challenging the interests, economy and values of the United States.
