Pentagon to consider $700 million military assistance to Pakistan
Almaty. November 13. Silkroadnews - The US Department of Defense will consider granting $700 million military aid to Pakistan, the Afghan Telegraph Agency (AfTAG) reports.
The U.S. Congress approved the proposal However, to receive the aid in case Islamabad needs the aid package to be approved by U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis.
According to Tolo, the Pentagon has put forward a number of requirements for Pakistan to receive assistance. In particular, Pakistan must confirm it makes every effort to fight the Haqqani and other terrorist groups on its territory.
Besides, Pakistan must assure it cooperates with Afghanistan to prevent militants crossing the border and strives to arrest the leaders of Haqqani and Lashkar-e-Tayyiba.
The U.S. Congress noted, the funds spending will be controlled by the U.S. if received by Pakistan.
In the meantime, NATO officials said peacebuilding in Afghanistan requires the due support by the neighboring countries.
In his turn the Afghan Defense Minister Tariq Bahrami stressed Pakistan could be a subject to pressure related to fighting with insurgents.
