Almaty. November 21. Silkroadnews - The President of the Philippines has offered China to become the third telecommunications operator in the country, Rappler news portal reported.
“During the bilateral talks between President Duterte and the Chinese Premier, the President offered to the People's Republic of China the privilege to operate the 3rd telecoms carrier in the country,” the presidential spokesman Harry Roque said.
According to him, the Philippine government is just waiting for Chinese telecommunications companies to submit their proposals. Roque said it will take the government only 45 days to decide whether the proposal will be accepted.
With this the Chinese company will have to comply with the provisions of the 1987 Constitution limiting foreign ownership of companies in the Philippines to 40%.
He also added, the proposal was made to China due to its proven ability to provide telecom services to millions of users.
“The last time the Philippine government entered into a communications deal with a Chinese company was in 2007 when it signed a multimillion-dollar deal with Chinese firm ZTE for a national broadband network,” the report reads.
