Akorda site informs, speaking to the participants of the meeting, Nursultan Nazarbayev elaborated on the point of Kazakhstan’s participation in the global anti-nuclear movement.

“Having created a nuclear-free zone in Central Asia, we call to form the sustainable peace geography. It is extension of six nuclear-free zones in Eurasia, Latin America and Africa. An important step was the signing in August 2015 of the agreement with the IAEA on low-enriched uranium Bank’s allocation in Kazakhstan. It is a global scale event. The world shall consider it as an important measure of the safe and peaceful use of atomic energy,” said Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The President also proposed to prohibit to use scientific discoveries to create new weapons.

“It is the time to make the fundamental decisions prohibiting placement of lethal weapons in outer space, on the bottom and in the neutral waters of the global ocean, as well as in the Arctic. It is necessary to develop international agreements and the UN registry to prohibit the use of scientific discoveries to create new types of weapons of mass destruction,” said the President of Kazakhstan.

In this context, the head of the state stressed the important task of creating the global anti-nuclear movement.
“This is what the international project “ATOM” initiated by Kazakhstan is aimed at getting now more widespread international support. While serving as the co-chairman of the 9th Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Kazakhstan will continue its efforts to ensure the Treaty’s full universalization,” he said.

As part of the presentation Nursultan Nazarbayev also discussed the topical issues of contemporary international security.

“Mankind used to have high hopes for the twenty-first century to become a new era of peace and global cooperation. Unfortunately, a unique historic opportunity to build a more secure and stable world order has been lost. Once again the world is in danger that shall not be underestimated. This threat is a deadly global scale war,” he said.

The President of Kazakhstan emphasized that the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons signed in 1968 does not fulfill its purpose and unprecedented crisis of confidence among the global players contributes to the degradation of safeguards to prevent the use of nuclear weapons.

“One of the most serious problems of the twenty-first century is the threat of nuclear terrorism and illicit trafficking in nuclear and radioactive materials. The world is “slipping” into a new nuclear age, which is potentially more dangerous and unpredictable. (...) To abolish the war is the most difficult task of civilization of mankind. Yet is does not have any other alternative,” Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

The President of Kazakhstan emphasized that the achievement of this objective requires political will of all the world leaders, deep qualitative changes in the paradigm of world development and the joint efforts of all the states.
