Almaty. December 29. Silkroadnews – Taiwan’s president accused China of creating instability in the region, information portal The Hindu Business Line wrote.
“China's frequent military activity is causing regional instability, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said, adding that the island’s forces have been keeping a close eye on what they are up to,” the report said.
China believes that Taiwan with its self-ruling and democracy is China’s inalienable territory. China has never abandoned the idea of using the force to bring the wayward province under its control.
The position of China towards Taiwan has become tougher after Tsai won last year’s presidential elections. Beijing suspects she insists on the island’s formal independence, in her turn Tsai claims she wants peace in the PRC, but will defend Taiwan’s security and lifestyle.
China’s air force has carried out 16 rounds of exercises near Taiwan in the past year, the official statement by the Taiwan’s Defense Ministry reports saying China’s military threat is growing every day. Beijing has repeatedly stated that its drills, also conducted in the disputed South China Sea and the Sea of Japan, are routine and not directed against anyone.
Tsai, speaking to high-ranking military officers in Taipei, said that the island wants peace, but cannot “have a single day without combat preparedness.”
“In this period of time, the frequent military activities of mainland China in East Asia have already affected safety and stability in the region to a certain extent. Our country has always been a contributor to safety and stability in the region, this is why the national army has to keep an eye on movements of the Chinese military and take appropriate actions when needed to guarantee the safety of the country and region,” she said.
China has warned Taiwan against “using weapons to refuse reunification”. However, this month the tension between the island and the mainland rose when a high-ranking Chinese diplomat threatened that China would invade Taiwan if any US warships made port visits there. “Taiwan is well equipped with mostly US-made weapons, but has been pressing Washington to sell more advanced equipment. The United States is bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, to China’s distaste,” the report reads.
