Inmates of the Milton Dias Moreira prison near Rio de Janeiro took seven prison guards hostages. Media said about three guards released with the elite SWAT unit members working together with police.
It is also reported, the riot in a heavily overcrowded prison (2,027 inmates are crowded into a facility built for 884 people) began with few prisoners trying to escape.
