Almaty. July 18. Silkroadnews - A record number of civilians died in Afghanistan since the beginning of the year, Los Angeles Times reported.
“Afghanistan’s protracted war killed a record number of civilians during the first six months of this year, according to a United Nations report released Monday, which blamed the majority of the deaths on bombings by insurgents. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Raad Hussein said the “horrifying” figure of 1,662 people killed between January and June of this year “can never fully convey the sheer human suffering of the people of Afghanistan””, publication said on Tuesday.
As noted in the report, the terrorist attack in Kabul on May 31, which killed at least 90 people, has become the deadliest since introduction of the US troops in 2001. It is also reported that this year there are more women and children among the dead civilians.
According to the report, 1114 civilians died in insurgent attacks, a 12% increase compared to the same period last year. In addition, 2,348 people were injured during such attacks. 434 civilians were killed during military operations against insurgents. At the same time, fewer civilians were caught in the crossfire in 2017 compared to last year.
