Released Guantanamo prisoners killed Americans in Afghanistan

Almaty. June 9. Silkroadnews – About 12 detainees released from the prison at Guantanamo have launched attacks against the U.S. or allied forces in Afghanistan, Afghan news agency (AfTAG) reported.

“The (Obama) administration believes that about 12 detainees released from the prison at Guantanamo have launched attacks against U.S. or allied forces in Afghanistan, killing about a half-dozen Americans,” The Washington Post wrote.

Among the victims there was also included one American civilian: a female aid worker who died in Afghanistan in 2008. Nine of the 12 militants “have been eliminated or sent to jail in one of the foreign countries”.
The officials, who spoke with newspaper journalists declined to give any exact numbers, saying the information on the released prisoners is classified as “top secret”.

“There appears to be a consistent and concerted effort by the Administration to prevent Americans from knowing the truth regarding the terrorist activities and affiliations of past and present Guantanamo detainees,” senator Kelly Ayotte wrote in her letter to Obama this week. Even those of her assistants who have admission to top secret material, could not get access to the documents on the detainees released.

According to the White House, nearly 21 percent of those 542 prisoners released prior to 2009 have reengaged in militancy, officials say, compared with about 4.5 percent of the 158 released by Obama. However, as the newspaper notes, the U.S. human rights activists say the statistics are suspect and cannot be verified. As a whole, publication notes, just under 700 detainees have been released from Guantanamo since the prison opened in 2002; 80 inmates remain.

To remind, the detainees of the prison are mainly persons captured in the course of the antiterrorist operation in Afghanistan.
